Nike's Notes....or Mike's Memo??Hello and licks to everyone....I've just become SHAK's newest dog! I've had such a long day as I've travelled all the way from Birmingham (thanks Uncle Matt!!). I met Auntie Sharon at the vets....yuck! Not Auntie Sharon! ....the vet!! He stabbed me with a neddle....oh boy I really hated that ....anyway I got him back....I peed all over the floor  ...that'll teach him!!! I think going to like it here at the farm ..... I don't mind the other dogs but the horse startled me. I've had a nice long drink and am hoping for some nice tea. Look out for my picture on the website....Auntie Sharon says I'm lush....but she told Uncle Terry I need my jangly bits sorting.....what does she mean???!!

Just met Nike (New name please? Answers on a post card) and he truly is a stunner. A wonderful combination of Rottweiler cross German Shepherd.
Sharon, I hope that comment was meant for the four legged SHAK boys and not the two legged variety!

Definitely the 4-legged boys who have all the looks!!! ( Some of them even have brains) The 2-legged SHAK boys.... God Bless Them......have neither ....they do have wonderful patience, sense of humour and big hearts tho'. That makes up for everything!!!

Can't wait to meet you either Tanja. I met Gregg, Helen and the imfamous music man BIG Stephen today on my first ever SHAK walk. Made 3 really special friends..... Oliver, Ginnie and Sam. I got on well with all of them, and even had my photo taken with Ginnie and Oliver!
Still trying to work out what those big things are in the field. Someone said they were called horses???
After a "discussion" about calling me something else, Birthday boy Stu decided to call me Kai. I like it.
There is a lot of new things happening to me, and its hard to take everything in. I'm really lucky to of come here, thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome

For some reason this fella etched his name on my heart several months ago when he did his first stint in the pound as a stray. I love the new name Kai, it suits you. Keep it coming Kai, I know you will make a perfect companion one day, and Shak are the people to find in you what I have always seen.

Hmmm yes walking, apparently they had Nike from a rescue as a puppy and were told never to walk him as he was going to be a very big and strong dog. So they didnt

Good Grief!
He has been to our fundraising weekend at Jollyes and loved meeting people and other dogs. Should be getting his dangly bits taken off in the next week or so, but he is a real nice boy.
Hoping there should be some pictures from the weekend on here soon.

I remember him coming in the first time around, he couldnt understand what a lead was. Scott worked hard getting him used to a lead, I bet Kai will be missing his daily walk round to the chippy and the extra special treat from the chippy owner - his jumbo sausage.
It was obvious when he came back in this 2nd time, he hadnt been walked much, Scott and Jaime had to reintroduce the lead and walks again. The sausage, he remembered.

Saturday and Sunday at the dog show
My first trip out with the SHAK gang and I really enjoyed it - so many people and dogs around. I think they were all there to see me, but it didn't bother me at all.
I sat quietly and watched it all go by - whats all the fuss about?

Thursday 11-June....
A big night for Kai - a visit to the dog training club - and he did really well!!
Before the class, Kai was introduced to some new people who all had treats for him, which he took very nicely, then it was off to do some work. There were 6 dogs in the class and Kai walked past all of them, then weaved in and out of them no problem at all. Then it was a couple of short sit stays and down stays along with some basic heelwork (as well as a few treats along the way).
As it was his first time in the class I wanted to make sure that it wasn't too much for him, so we kept dropping out for a break and some 1 to 1 exercises for more treats.
I think tonight has shown the potential that Kai has - he listens well to his commands and really focuses during 1 to 1's and he is really motivated by food.
With some more basic training and socialising to overcome some minor problems (he pulls on his lead and is distracted by dogs moving behind him) I'm sure he will do very well. But, we will take our time with this and let Kai learn at his pace and hopefully he will enjoy it.
In a few weeks he will be top of the class!!
Unfortunately, the photographer didn't get me in the picture! (OK, before anyone else says it FORTUNATELY)

Hello everyone, I've had a great time today. I get myself in a bit of a tiz in my stable, so Jackie anfd Terry have had me outside a lot. Then Stephen let me off my lead in this big field, it was great I could sniff anywhere I wanted, and if I went back to him I got treats!

Hello Dianne, I'm doing ok. Went for a nice walk with Harlie today, she is pretty. She is playing hard to get but I know she likes me.
I over heard the 2 Stephens today and they were saying that they were going to try and up my "one on one" aswell as my group work, because they say I will make someone a good dog one day.
I like it here, but with Scoobs and Miko here, and another Brummy coming tomorrow I think, Oliver said that that has now been called "Kitty Bromwich" instead of Kitty Brewster! ha ha

A quick update on Kai's training:
I took Kai for a training session, and was very impressed by the way he is settling down. I've walked him quite a few times since he arrived, but had not seen him off lead, so we started with a good run around in the field and he was having a great time just bouncing around and exploring everything. I had taken a toy to try with him, but he wasn't too bothered with that, but the bag of chicken really worked!
While he was playing, I did some recalls with pieces of chicken as a reward and he responded very well, came in and sat nicely then off again to play. After a good run around, I calmed him down a bit with a short heelwork session on lead (just a few minutes) and again he was listening and paying attention. After that we did some sit stay and down stay exercises, and he really showed a lot of improvement from the first time we did them. He was sitting on the first command, and I was able to step away (off lead) and even circle him before stepping back to him to complete the exercise and give him his reward, and he was just as good with the down stay. Kai has been a little nervous of movement behind him, so I was pleased that I could around him while he stayed. He's also learning a "Nicely" command when taking treats, after the first piece of chicken had my finger with it!
I'm planning to continue these sessions with Kai, so we'll see how it goes, but we'll take our time with it and have some fun as well.

Hello - another training update on Kai:
I had another session with him yesterday, and again more improvement. We started with him running loose in the field exploring everything, but still coming back when called (he really likes his biscuits). Then we did some sit stays and as last time he did really well - sitting on one command (still off lead) and allowing me to walk away about 10 paces, a full circle around him then back to his side where he waited a few seconds for his reward. Same with the down stay, walk away, full circle around him, back to his side, step over him and back again, then reward. He is quite relaxed when he is in a stay, so we'll continue to build up (and vary) the time and distances. Then it was a short heelwork exercise then some fun and games. When we'd finished training we went out for a walk along by the river to relax
We're still keeping his training sessions short, as he is quite easily distracted, but doing well. I'll get some photos of him training for the next update.

Kai is finding it a little bit difficult to settle in his kennel at the moment. He is eating plenty, but tends to work it off with being restless in his run.
We have him on a diet of "green" tripe as well as his normal meals, and hopefully will start putting weight back on.
Unfortunately its a tough situation that often develops when dogs are in kennels

god that is the same with most dogs in kennles dogs are not meant to be in confined spaces oviously he doesn feel relaxed but this is a fact of life in kennels but that green stufff peeeeewwwwww does it smell but bet he loves it soon put some meet on him lol .

On a serious note, spending every day with Kai has seen us really bond. He is such a stress head, and one of the main objective's I had when I opened The Rescue Place was to try and deal with his stress and get some weight on him.
After a couple of weeks, here he is. How does he look?
