Miko's Story.

Miko arrived today from the same pound as Scooby and Kai, and with a few issues to say the least. He is snotting quite badly, which resulted in an emergency isolation kennel being knocked up in the farm offices, and he generally is a right state. Underweight, covered in scars, teeth worn down and rotten, and never seen a brush, goodness only knows what his story is before finding his way to us.

Miko is clearly stressed, and is showing clear signs of "fear aggression." However, he is fine with a handler once he is out on the lead. He has had a busy day, so we can excuse his bad manners tonight, I'll be spending some time with him tomorrow after he has had time to settle a bit.

Stephen, I am really sorry about the KC but I was unware of this until the transport run was already under way and I suppose this is one of the risks when dealing with the poundies.

Thanks for taking him into your care.

wyliecat88

It's ok Jennie, that is one of the things we have to cope with.

He is stressed as hell, but is fine once you get him on a lead. Sure he'll blossom, with a bit of SHAK tlc.

Although i didt have much to do with miko, i saw  him come into the pound completely shut down, its the first time i saw a dog that withdrawn.  he just didnt want to know.  he had started to come round and was  going on walks.  it makes me angry to see what people do to these dogs that only want to love.
thank you once again for helping out our poundies.
tanja

Well I saw this big guy briefly today! He def needs a lot of tlc but I am sure we will get there with him!
wrightk-9

i have a soft spot for this guy i used to spend a sneeky 20 min in the morning after i cleaned him out for a fuss and even a kiss, i worked hard at getting this guy to trust me he then wanted to follow me which was great it took pete 2 tins of chappy to get him to have a lead on to walk . he is very unsure of new people but with time he started to come round and food was the tool that he liked the most he only recently got kc and has had 3-4 day on tabs.

good look big lad i no u will come on leaps and bounds.
wyliecat88

Well, after all the stress of yesterday, Miko went for his first proper walk with me today. He is fine with the person on the other end of the lead, but is still very warying of strangers and other people being around. You can see he wants to relax, throw him a ball and he is in his element (not brave enough to try and take it off him yet) and as you can see from the pictures below, I have found the reason for his teeth to be so worn down.

I really think that given time and being socialised around people, Miko will be ok. We just have to wait for this damn kennel cough to sort itself out, then he can be intergrated with the others.

Well done John, he wouldn't of gotten this far without the time and effort you put in with him.

ladykeli

lovely pics  especially that one with the dirty tongue.
wrightk-9

aaawwww look at that face now you no why i  couldn help fall for this guy.
he looks happyer already.
good look big man .
hollysmom

I haven't met this handsome guy either, but he has something in his eyes, the way he stares at the camera.  Thanks for taking him into your care Shak x
wyliecat88

John, he definatley has somthing. You just look at him and know he wants to be loved. Forgot to mention, I brushed him today with no problem, and yes the fact he he is protective of his handler is an issue, I know he wants to learn. And he will. By the way, boy he loves the ball!
wrightk-9

excellent he is a dream to be around wen it is just me and him just needs to socialize as i no you no but he learns megga fast useing his motivation for both food and ball u cant loose lol .
hollysmom

Oh no Stephen is that why his teeth are worn down because of chewing on rocks  Sad
melia

Great photos!  I walked this boy at the pound and he was fine with me along the canal where it was nice & peaceful but along the road he barked at everything, dogs, cars etc.  I'm glad he is somewhere safe where he can relax and learn to trust people again.  Oh by the way John - Pete said it was 3 tins of chappie before he managed to get him out of the kennel for his first walk - which is a record (he usually has Gsds out in 1 lol).
wrightk-9

Laughing well he does love his grub very mutch lol
wyliecat88

How could we cap Scooby's walk? (See the notes under todays date in Scooby 2)

Simple, get Miko to walk with 2 of us without growling. I've walked him a couple of times, and I'll be honest I feel very comfortable with him. For BIG Stephen it was the first time. He walked straight up to him and was greeted by a ball getting stotted around, and he was quite happy going on the lead. Next we went into the field and he did nothing but growl and bark at me as I walked 6 feet away. However, just by talking to him so he knew it was me, I was stroking him (whilst BIG S held the lead) and within a minute we both had hands on touching him.

It was sensational to see the change, and you know I really think that Miko is going to turn into one hell of a GSD. The vet has been out to see him today, and he is back on tablets for his cough, get that all out of the way, and the real work will begin.

Well done Miko, your on your way
stephen-c

Tonight was so rewarding - after my first walk with Scooby, it was my first meeting with Miko.  He was in his office playing with the ball, and without any reaction to me as a complete stranger, let me put his lead on and take him out for a walk.  After 1 or 2 growls at Stephen he settled down very quickly and was being stroked and taking treats with both of us standing next to him.  This is such a change in only a few days.  In no time at all he'll be out with the rest of the gang.

I can't wait to see Miko, Scooby, Sam, Harlie, Kai, Oliver and Jasmine walking down the road to the farm together - it's just a matter of time, and that will be a picture to put on the front page!!
wrightk-9

you  can seee that this boy has massive potential and i no he can shine like a star and melt peoples hearts.
wyliecat88

Arrived at the farm tonight and Miko was already enjoying a stroll with Terry. When I approached, there was no growling or barks just a nice friendly wag of the tail and a little nuzzle into me. We played for a little, this boy is so alert, and would you believe he let me take a stone out of his mouth without growling???
wrightk-9

now this lad is a star he has deffernatly got the brains behind that brawn it is just finding the rite aproch and clearly you have, hope his kc is getting better.
melia

How lovely to hear that Miko is settling down.  He obviously feels more secure and his true personality is emerging! You are all doing a fantastic job!

xx
wyliecat88

There was also a bit of progress with Miko today. Thankfully his snotting and coughing as cleared up, so he will be getting moved into a kennel later today. I have already mentioned on here, that he has issues if he is approached by more than one person. Well, today he was in the field playing with a ball and Gregg, BIG Stephen and myself. It was great to see him so at ease, and it has to be said the ball is definitely the way forward with this boy. Miko is a classic German Shepherd, ball daft, and loved being out with us today. We could of filled the field with 300 people and as long as there was a ball he would have been happy.  And the best bet was, we all loved it too. This is another dog that came to us with issues, but for that 30 minutes he was just a dog playing.

Oh yes, and he even managed to drag BIG Stephen down the hill on his knees after one of Gregg’s throws. Police have given a warning to all pilots flying into Newcastle Airport that the mark BIG S’s backside made isn’t a new runway!
wrightk-9

oh ye oh ye that my boy bless him he just needed a focus and that is the ball so now he is a sociating people with fum rather than hurt it is excellent for him .
wyliecat88

Miko moved into the kennels with the other dogs yesterday, and now spends his time flinging his football around. He has been around the other dogs today, without showing any anything untowards. His proper rehab starts this week.  Wink
wrightk-9

fantastic it didnt take him long to get better se that his fighting spirit lol.
wyliecat88

Miko was in the run when I got to the farm tonight. He just loves to chew and play with things. There was three of us and a dog watching through the fence, and he had dogs on either side, but he didn’t have a care in the world as he chewed his way through a kids plastic paddling pool.
wrightk-9

ah hahah does he no its for swiming in not chewing lol .
wyliecat88

Miko has chilled so much more today, that I decided to try him in the field of lead. You get a nice greeting from him when you go up and see him, and if you  have a toy, well he's all yours.

wrightk-9

dont ask me how i no this but i think he likes his toys lol
ladykeli

wow what a change. Smile
wyliecat88

Have you ever seen anything like this?

"Pig in Sh*t" springs to mind.

wrightk-9

yep my thoughts exactly lol simple things and simple minds lol,
melia

Awwww bless him! he looks so happy  Smile
wyliecat88

Bit of a Brummy reunion last night, as Miko went out with another dog for the first time, old kennel bud Duke.

For everyone who has been following Miko's story and knows about his fear of more than one person at a time, this is a massive achievement. Another dog, and two people.

Miko is really coming into his own, and I know I'm biased with Shepherds, but I'm developing a real soft spot for him.
melia

Thats good news!  How did they get on?
wyliecat88

We just take small steps, so they were kept just out of touching distance. Duke seemed to want to play, and Miko was just very very curious.
melia

It sounds promising though.  Do you find that the dogs help to re-habilitate each other?  I started walking a very stressed dog at the pound with well-balanced dog and couldnt believe the change in him after just two walks.  He used to constantly jump up at me and whine but once he was with another dog his behaviour completely changed.  It was amazing to see how they relaxed and enjoyed each others company.
wrightk-9

miko isa star with that niscievious look and happy nature and his love for his balls lol no pun intended hes is going to do well i  think,

dont tell scooby bout miko he might get jelous lol.
wyliecat88

Definatley, dogs learn so much from each other. Scooby is so good at this, he is really a brilliant asset to have.
wyliecat88

Bet no one ever expected me to say that when I was at Rosedene.    Wink
wrightk-9

hi melia well that is what im ding with maizey and jet maizy is helping poor jet as he was behind his bed for 3 days then when he walt past her his tail came out just for a few seconds now he wants to interact with me ,

i am also doing it with chuky who is major dog aggressive i now walk him with a calm chanelle and they are best of friends now going for walks and to the chip shop at dinner lol.
wyliecat88

John, thats brilliant bud, you're doing a wonderful job. Keep it up.
wyliecat88

Miko went out with Harlie today, as we try and step up his socialisation. He was a bit barky at first, until he found a plastic pop bottle to carry. After that he was perfect, and I'm not sure, but it seemed as if he kept looking back and waiting for Harlie.
wrightk-9

aaawwwwwww love is in the air du du du du
wyliecat88

Once again Scooby earned his keep today, as he and Miko had a trip into town. These two even sniffed each other and as usual nothing phased Scooby. Miko was great, and such an improvement from last Sunday, he only got excited when some bikes and a motorbike went past. He then found a pop bottle, and that was it, he was happy. So much so that when a bike passed him again, he turned the other way (probably to protect his plastic friend.) It was a really good exercise for both dogs, and both me and Gregg were proud of them both.

Think I have to say though, Miko made so much progress today. It's down to us to help him continue his rehab.
wrightk-9

both these dogs have the brains and eagerness to please that they will go a long way i mean i know i keep saying it but scooby is a prime example.

well done boys.
shaz

I was whisked away this morning to see that chap Jonathon again!! I really don't care much for him!  I wasn't alone though 'cos that big lad Duke was there too!  Aunty Sharon put me back in my kennel with a satisfied smile on her face.  She said something about a trouser trim! Ouch I've got a pain!
melia

Two in 1 day Aunty Sharon! Hope lovely Mikka feels better soon!  xx
wyliecat88

Really proud of Miko today, in fact proud doesn't do him justice. Over the last month or so, me , Gregg and Scooby have been walking Miko up to a busy road where there is a lot of traffic, people and  a huge Asda. First time he wasn't too good and barked and lunged at everything. However, if he had his favourite toy with him he wasn't phased,  so that is how we have cracked it the last couple of weeks.

Today was a big day for him. Just me and him, and NO BALL. Elaine (my wife) was leaving the farm as I started the walk, so I got her to drive really slowly with the window down and talking to me and Miko as we walked. Miko barked twice or three times and then just sniffed and walked totally ignoring Elaine (He learns off me very quickly ha ha) Next up a teenager on a bike came straight for us. Miko again barked two or three times and then walked on. The key point in these two events is that at neither did he lunge and after the couple of barks he regained his composure by himself.

To cap the walk off, we then walked for about 100 yards with a man on the other side of the street. We were level with the man and Miko didn't even acknowledge he was there.

Well done Miko, I knew we could do it together.
wrightk-9

well done big lad im so prode of you .

and as for you steve how hasnt elien devorced ya yet lol  hehe taking strange dogs home lol even if it was a perfect dog then egnoring her  lol well to be fare they need to know there place too lol

wyliecat88

John, thats the truest post you've ever put on here lol.

You would of been so proud of Miko today. He just enjoyed the walk. No toys, no stress, no misbehaving. He was simply a dog enjoying his walk.  Wink
wrightk-9

haha lol y thanks buddy and what anamazing change you have made to big lad (miko) lol
wyliecat88

The first thing I wanted to do when I started working with Miko every day was to try and build up his weight. Hopefully you can see from the pictures below, that we have started to make progress.

And whilst I think on, he walked into the local village with 5 other dogs and handlers yesterday, with no barking or misbehaving and (wait for it) NO TOY.

wyliecat88

Yesterday Miko was in a run with Gregg and I and somebody approached from outside with their 7 dogs (5 Jack Russells and 2 Labs) and all we got from him was two barks before he went off with his ball. Sure anyone who saw him when he first came to us will appreciate what a massive step that is.
wrightk-9
