Duke..... (Formerly Spaghetti)

A big thank you to Johnnie. He arrived home from a meeting in Coventry with a Mastiff cross in his boot that he picked up en route. Sharon has decided to call this big strong boy Duke, and he really is going to take some work. He only arrived at 9pm, and is very stressed and very nervous.  It is going to take a while for him to realise that no one is going to hurt him, but I am sure it is a hurdle we can cross. Hopefully I will get some pictures soon, and of course you can follow his progress on here

Well done John for working so hard with this guy, and thanks for helping getting him up here.

I'm sure Duke will settle down quickly with you.  He is a nervous lad but once he gets to know you his true personality shines through.  Like me, all the regular walkers at the pound fell in love with him, its such a shame that he ended up there.  I'm glad he is with you now, he deserves a chance - thank you all for helping him.

Heres a little background for you on Duke, this poor dog was holed up for a few weeks in brambles between a train line and dual carriageway.  It took many days of perservering by the dogwarden Maurice Jones....who spent a few hours a day, feeding in a bid to gain his trust.  On the day he finally gave up, he had to endure further torment when a group of yobbos tried to attack the dogwarden and a member of the public for taking the dog.  Scared stiff, Duke tried to pull himself under the dogwardens van that was parked on a busy dual carriageway.  Police arrived and escorted the wardens van away, but some of the officers recognised Duke as belonging to a local asian man, the police had apparently attended this house of several occasions, the dog apparently lay in a very small garden with nothing more than concrete as a friend and would quiver in fear when they entered the garden and tried to acknowledge him.

Good luck Duke and thanks again Shak for your help.

My lovely boy now known as Duke, one of my faves down the kennels, and i used to walk him a lot, will miss him.
When he first came in he was very scared, but after a while gained confidence.
He is very food motivated but not very polite taking it.
He never seemed bothered by other dogs down there, and is not too bad to walk.
Just needs some training, he is in the best place.
wyliecat88

Thank you all. We'll do all we can to sort him out.

Forgot to add, Johnnie and I took him for a walk last night when he arrived with another dog. Picked somthing very calm and well behaved, so to set Duke an example..... yep you got it. He went out with Scooby  Wink  Razz   Wink

Would just like to add that they are fantastic photos and thank dog you changed his name, he definately looks like a Duke.  Smile
wyliecat88

Thank you Dianne, photo's are mine, the name is Sharons lol.

Duke is still very nervous, and you have to be very careful that he doesn't feel threatened, but as you can see he has had a nice day of lead in on of the runs making friends with me and BIG Stephen. Yes that is my knee he is sitting on.

Think that's why this rescue works so well, I let BIG Stephen tire them out, then I get the cuddles.  Wink

oscar153

Those pictures are great, Duke looks so handsome and happy, i miss seeing him down kennels already.

wyliecat88

After such a brilliant night with Scooby, I take Duke into the office to see how he will react. He is still terrified, but loves every minute of it. He even meets Denbar ( A Rotti/Dobi cross we rehomed to the farm) off lead, and loves meeting him.

You look at this dog and think big powerful lad, but deep down he is just a baby trying to find his way in life.Hopefully just a introducing him into society by spending a little bit of time in the office will help him cope with this.

To everyone in Birmingham, you were right. Duke really is a star.  Laughing
wrightk-9

this big boy is just a baby in a b/4-ig boys body i love him he is just a sweet boy but the more exposer he has the betterop06. just like puppys i do miss his slobbery kisses and that tail whipping your leggs..

love you lots duke x

I spent some time with Duke today, and he seems to be settling in OK.  When he first arrived, he backed away in to the corner of his kennel when I looked in, but after a few minutes came over to say hello and have some treats.  Today he bounced up to the gate to see me for cuddles and a few treats which he took very gently and with nice sits.  As soon as he saw I had a lead with me, he got really excited, and we enjoyed a walk around the farm.  He does pull a bit on his lead, but that's something to work on.  He is showing his nice nature and temperment and that he's just a big soft boy.
wyliecat88

Duke went out for a nice walk last night with a new pal..... fellow Brummy Miko. He was very keen to try and play, and he is getting better every day.
wrightk-9

thats my big boy!!

time is all this guy needed now he has all the time in the world thanks to you guys.
wyliecat88

Scooby took the big man out for a walk today, and showed him the ropes. He wanted to play, and still has no manners on the lead, but will learn off "ol Stooge"  Wink
oscar153

Duke has had a couple of rough days.  He's had a lot of swelling and bruising following his trip to the vets.  The SHAK boys have all been wincing and crossing their legs when they've seen him.
melia

i do miss that wagging tail and goofy look on his face and the slobery kisses.
tanja

Hey Doug wants to know how his big lad Duke is doing?? Has the huge amount of swelling gone down yet??
stephen-c

A short training session with Duke yesterday after his walk.  We did some work on sit and stay, which is quite a challenge for him as he loves his treats and just can't wait when he's sees that you have something for him.  He did really well, and after only a few minutes he was waiting patiently while I walked away from him to the end of his run, and back to give him his reward.

well done Duke  Very Happy
stephen-c

Another training session with Duke today to continue the good work he did at the weekend.  More sit stays (for chicken this time) and he did very well again - really paying attention and sitting nicely waiting for his reward.  We also had some time for a few cuddles! - he's a real big softy!

Smile
melia

Well done Duke!  Very Happy

wyliecat88

"A couple of old friends came to see me today, and it was really good to see them.

I was a bit grumpy at first, sorry Karen and Sharon, just behind those bars I'm never quite sure if someone is going to hurt me.

Once Stephen got me out of my kennel though, I realised it was you, and it was GREAT to see you"

Love

Duke

X
melia

It was great to see Duke today, he has so much more confidence now and he is looking much better, he seems to have gained some weight and it makes him look even more handsome!
oscar153

Lovely Duke, it was so good to see him, he did let himself down at first, but as soon as he came out he was friendly and lovable.
wyliecat88

Duke is just still a bit wary of strangers. He did recognise you both though once we took the bars away.
