Becky's DiaryThursday 21 May....
I had a trip to the vets today for my second vaccination. Last time I was there I was a little bit stressed and barked at a dog in the waiting room, but this time I was so much better and walked straight past a german shepherd. Meeting all of the other SHAK dogs is showing me that it is OK to be around others without getting stressed. I was also a good girl for the vet and had my vaccination with no problems at all.

Saturday 23 May....
I went out for a walk with the SHAK gang today and I was walking in the middle of all the other dogs with no problems at all. I was so close to Lola and Jake and didn't bark once! It's really good for us to go out together and show how good we can all be. I'm learning so quickly that I hope I can find my new home soon, but until then, I'll enjoy my trips out with my new friends.

Wednesday 27 May....
We all had a treat today - an extra walk. I was first to go, along with Max. We were both quite excited at first but soon settled down and enjoyed a nice walk in the sunshine. Every time I go out, I learn more about how to behave around the other dogs and I am getting better all of the time.

Saturday and Sunday 6-7 June
What a great weekend I've had - a visit to a dog show. I made lots of new friends and met lots of dogs - some of them even looked like me (but not as pretty). If there are any rosettes left, I could put one up in my kennel - I think I deserve it.

I had a nice walk again on Saturday with my 2 and 4 legged friends. I love it when people come and make a fuss of me! I love to wag my tail hard so they can tell I'm pleased to see them. The long grass was lovely today so I wriggled in it a lot it made my 2 legged friends laugh a lot and I got my tummy tickled too!!

Had an exciting day today, as I went for a pamper day with the girls. It was great fun, and I really enjoyed just being able to relax and be spoilt.
Sonia said I was "good as gold" as I was shampooed, and I have to say the foamy stuff smelt really nice.
Thank you girls for treating me. It reminded me of when I used to have a people to spoil me in a house.

Hi i'm Debbie, Becky's new mum It's only been a week today since i brought her home, and unfortunately i cant speak for her, so i'll tell u about today for me, cos it was amazing !!!
I really wanted to take her to the beach with A1 today, but it was hot and she gets really car sick so we just had a quick walk in the morning before i kissed her goodbye and headed off to the kennels. Today i cant say that any of us walked any one dog cos we all walked them all at some point, though i didnt walk max he took some treats off me and was close while i was walking lola They all had a great time with BIG stephen and aunty sharon taking all of them 2 by 2 into the sea and let them splash around like newbies, while Jonny and I picked up the poo that the others left behind !! They all had a fantastic time and I'm sure they would have loved to stay there all day ! All dogs were great in the car other than max poor boy who obviously just doesnt like cars, and poor BIG steve too !!
Then it was to the Kitty, I went home after chatting to the A1 girls and BIG steve about my concerns for Becky, and they gave me some food for her and each some great advice. And i'm sorry u girls that u miss her so much but i will bring her back to visit So anyway off we trotted to the kitty and after her usual first few pulls on the lead she settled down and walked lovely by my side, no longer with a canny collar on! We got to the Kitty and passed all the dogs on the left Denba, Tara and Miko on his lead further up and Olly too, all excited and saying hello, she was a babe, looked but never went at all ! She feels very comfortable around there and the difference in her is amazing.
BIG steve and i set off to walk Kai and Becks, which they did admirably, no issues whatsoever, i couldnt believe it, but i know most of it is the trust that all the dogs have in the shaks people and those involved with them, and she just relaxes more round there. Though then i took oliver out while BIG steve took scooby. I have to say in the 2 weeks since i last walked Olly and he nearly ripped my arm off bless him, he has come on amazingly, he only pulled once or twice when he got a really strong scent, but other than that he was a gent on the lead and both him and scooby didnt even bother when when a group of dogs came up to them off the lead starting trouble ! They were just amazing !
And lastly i'd like u to know that my Becky i think got a little bit jealous as she started kicking off when i went up to Olly to take him for a walk. She was so pleased to see everyone today, the people who have saved and loved her the last few months, that i even got some kisses from her tonight on the sofa, only my hand but its early days and it made my heart sing, i think a little thank u for taking her back to see her old and forever friends. And even better, with the good advice and encouragement from everyone at shaks, a1 and the kitty, she's ate more tonight than she has in the last 5 days ! A mixture of everything ! Thank u all!
She's a beautiful girl and i love her, i hope she comes to love and trust me too, and whoever gave her up is a fool. I will post some pics of her as soon as i work out how to !

Hi, Debbie, you must be so proud to be Becky's new mommy, Just give her a bit more time and she will be the bestest friend you have ever had, I am so pleased she has at last found a home and someone to love her, when I first saw her photo from the pound looking for a rescue she so reminded me of my Holly and the same age and then Stephen came to her aid. Rotties show you so much love and devotion and yes your right, the person that gave up Becky was a fool, you won't regret giving her a home and she will thank you for it over and over again in the years to come.

Hi Deb, I met you at the kennels the other week but have been at work the last couple so couldn't make it. I was pleased when I found out you took Becky she is a little star! If you have any more problems pop into Jollyes down the road from you and ask for Doug, thats my other half and he is the ass manager in there and would have loads of ideas for you to try. He will happily help you out now that I have him hooked on the shak dogs!x

Hi agn, I just wanted to thank a few people Thank u to hollysmom and tanya for ur replies and for ur offer tanya, i will and hopefully we'll catch up again one saturday and to hollysmom, thank u for ur kind words, she's a babe, we're getting used to each other slowly, with plenty of help from everyone involved with SHAKS, it's little but huge steps each time. They all have such great advice, the dogs they save know them and trust them. and they learn so quickly how to handle dogs and their quirks !
And thank u to BIG Steve, I promised Frankie and Sonia at A1 that i'd take Becks back to see them today, and Steve very kindly offered to meet me there and help me with some one on one training with Becks for her recall. It didnt go as well as we hoped while we were there, one naughty horse, (not Sonia's!! ) unfortunately grabbed her attention too much ! However, BIG Steve did manage to show me a way with a toy to train her, and though it only worked for a short time with Steve at A1, and he nearly lost his foot !! the memory is still with her.
Not only did i have her staying and coming to me when called in the garden, but we played with the rope toy tonight after in the shoe box, she got really excited and played with me, warned me right off it a few times, but i stood my ground and got it back, and tugged awhile longer ! Im doing as BIG Steve said and little bits at a time, though i think she might have wanted to play some more, certainly outside !! Turns out she just doesnt like hot sausages, she loves them cold in little slices ! And she eats after everytime we play, not much, but little by little, she's such a lady !
Thank u sooo much to Jackie for her advice of her feeding, she's ate more the last 2 days than she has since last sunday ! Yesterday it took an hour but she ate a whole bowl full and a bit of bakers complete with shreds of chicken ! 2day she's into sausages ! Another fussy eater !!! Ok, my own fault, she's not stupid !! Wouldn't anyone prefer a chicken dinner with all the veg and yorkshires to dog food !! Doh!!
Ive already decided to enter becks into 3 of the dog shows at the Jolleys event in Westerhope, she's such a star, my little Beckstar i call her, pronounced beksta in northern ! And lastly I'd like to thank Sharon and Jonny for inviting me to there bar b q yesterday, and it was lovely to meet everyone, sorry i had to leave so early, i'd have loved to have stayed, oh i got asked a dozen times from the carers at my mums home, why didn't i bring becks??? Have promised to take her back wednesday, hope she gets used to the car !! But on the whole i think we're getting there, i hope she's happy with me, i doubted for awhile, but maybe
Will keep u informed

Hi Tanja, it's been a struggle this past week getting her to eat at all, she wont touch tinned food, and i've just managed to ween her off the fresh cooked chicken, i'm just relieved she's finally eating something, though again not nearly enough but Bakers is the only thing so far that she'll eat, she wont even touch the stuff the kennels gave me, other than the bakers Any suggestions are greatly welcomed !! And yes i'll be there on saturday, so will chat more then, x

Cool thats fab, I understand getting her to eat anything is amazing so least thats a start. To be honest even tinned food half the time is rubbish unless you read into it properly! A lot does have to depend on how much you spend on food cos unfortunately you do get what you pay for! My 2 eat a 15kg bag a month and the food is about £45 but it suits them great so wont change! Main thing is she looks great and happy so that is whats important cos she really is a lush dog. See you sat xx

Hi Debbie, please persevere, but you must wean her off the Bakers, the stuff is full of c*ap, how about Chappie, Iv'e heard dogs do good on that and doesn't have all the preservatives, colourings and e numbers that some other dog food has. Chicken & Rice kibbles with some gravy mixed in, you just have to experiment with trial & error, but definately no Bakers. My Heidi was a bit apprehensive about getting in the car, but now she assiciates with getting in the car means good times, ie off the lead and in the park. She certainly looks comfy on the bed, Iv'e had Heidi coming up to three months now and her personality is just coming out, You will have a lot of ups and downs, but with a Rottie there will be more ups, and you won't regret giving her a home so she feels safe and loved and you will have a friend who will be so loyal it will astound you. x

Debbz im afraid Tanja is spot on and that with commercial dog food you get what you pay for. Cheaper options like bakers, chappie, pedigree, winalot etc do not offer dogs anything like the nutrition they need. A quick look at chappies ingriedients show the following:
Cereals (min 4% wholegrain), derivatives of vegetable origin, meat & animal derivatives (a minimum 4% poultry), oils & fats, minerals. Also contains antioxidants & preservatives.
Bear in mind that by law the ingreidients have to be shown in volume order i.e. biggest ingriedient first, this shows that the dogs biggest source of protein is cereal follwed by derivatves of veg then animals (the crap in other words). Dogs require animal meat to get the neccessary type of protien, amino acids and fats for their bodies to function correctly, they just dont get that from cereal or veg. Secondly and most importantly the preservatives mentioned are BHA, BHT & Ethoxyquin all three of which are proven carcinogens in humans and dogs and only serve to improve the shelf life of cheap dog food. They sometimes go under the guise of EC approved preservatives but there danger is just the same.
The things to look out for in the dog which may suggest their diet isnt right are:
Large smelly poo, diahorrea, smelly farts
Dandruff, flaky, itchy skin
compulsive scratching on tail, belly, legs
Eating grass, coprophagia and things like paper, tissue or wood (sources of fibre)
Aggression, irritability, lack of concentration.
If Becksta is showing all or a selection of these symptoms then you should consider a change in diet, again to copy Tanja go and see doug at Jolleys blyth and im sure he can help but a rule of thumb is "you get what you pay for".
Apologies for the shocking spelling

I only mentioned Chappie because a boarding kennels I deal with who take in pound dogs temporarily while awaiting foster homes, usually have upset tummies, she feeds them Chappie mixed with kibble and it always seems to cure them. she's tried other wet meat and it always makes them worse. And she's always warned me off Bakers and Chum. Sometimes you can put the most healthiest food available down for them and they wont touch it. Chappie has been around for a long time, and if it helps Becky to eat then why not mix a bit in with some healthy food. At the end of the day we all want whats best for Becky.

Hi Hollysmom, it has indeed been a week and a half of trial and error, and have only just now managed to ween her off the fresh chicken, after a week of panicking cos she refused to eat anything else, but with Jackies advice got her off it in a day
And with Steve's advice of the tripe, the last few days she's ate fine, a mixture of 4 different completes with stinky uncooked tripe mixed in it, its rank but i dont care as long as she eats, which happily now she is ! I understand what everyone is saying about Bakers and have bought her some IAMS, which she eats fine, with the tripe, so within a day or two she'll be off the Bakers completely. Everyone who knows her says she looks good and like she's filling out and i think actually she is ! With regards to the rest of it, we're getting there with the recall, i now have her walking to heel on the lead, except when she gets a strong scent then she pulls a bit, and when she sees another dog its war ! lol. I have a communal garden outside my flat which i can get her to walk to heel to me all the way round and stay and come when called, her running to me full pelt for a treat of chicken or sausage is a sight to be seen ! Last night she even honoured me with a play and was growling and jumping up at me like a puppy ! It was brill ! Like i said before, small but huge steps each time and I think she's slowly begining to trust me
The car is another step we'll over come bit by bit hopefully, but im not able to let her off the lead yet on walks otherwise i'd do exactly as u say and associate it with a treat, like taking her to the beach and letting her run wild, till then its short journeys at a time, she can manage 10 mins but not 20 ! Unfortunately one of those trips will be to the vets again next week to check on her weight. I will keep u informed of her progress and thank u to everyone for ur help and support

Good news Deborah. I swear by the tripe, its great for getting weight on.
|

Hollysmom i only used chappie as an example cos it was mentioned the same can be said of most commercial dog foods, i dont feed my dogs any complete foods so perhaps my bias is laid bare.
Im pleased Becks is eating and I agree with Steven that tripe is a great food for dogs, all beit that is stinks to high heaven.
Be aware that if she stops eating suddenly its probably not the food thats the problem but perhaps stress, which can cause dogs to stop eating. If it happens again speak to me before changing foods.
Good stuff about the play, use that as a potent reward for training i.e. walking on a loose lead for 5 steps gets becks a play etc. Getting her hooked on a training toy for games of tuggy makes training a great deal easier.
Well done anyway, keep it up.

Hi trustee no2, it was my fault that becky stopped eating, me wanting to spoil her for being so ace. I brought her home with me Sat 27th june, and she ate fine that night, the tinned and complete i gave her, and again sunday morning no problem. By our 2nd walk on sunday, our 3rd in total since i brought her home, she was walking without the canny collar and on a loose lead, other than a few tugs when she gets a scent. So i cooked her a chicken dinner all the trimmings. from monday morning she wouldnt touch her dog food, any which one i tried, unless laiden with fresh chicken and then most the dog food and complete was left. I tried every which dog food, with others advice in pet shops and online, but she'd touch none of it without the fresh chicken, but ate more of the bakers, obviously getting hungrier by this time !
I weened her off the chicken, but she wasnt eating enough still, so now i'm giving her tripe to build her up and get her used to eating a full meal again. Though once she gets to her perfect condition, weight skin etc, i'll ween her off that too, as i believe its too fattening and i dont want her to become over weight. I would welcome a healthy substitute that i can ween her onto instead of the complete, as i know that dog food in general wet or dry isnt' a true sustinence for them, so if u have any suggestions or recipe's i'd be grateful of them, and certainly try them.
Becky and i have only been together for 11 days now, and given what this girl has gone through, which lets face it, she was picked up as a stray so none of us really know, it's going to take a lot longer than normal for becks and i to click and gel, but i know we're getting there. The first day i brought her home i sat on the end of the sofa after taking her to a bowl of water and let her sniff around and come to me. After a bit she wiggled up to me pretty much backwards and sat on my foot while i stroked her and welcomed her to her new home, she turned round and gave me a kiss, and has never given me one since, once on my hands last saturday, the day she claimed my pillow ! but never on my face. Everyone at shaks and a1 and the kitty, everyone who came into my flat she welcomed with a kiss, me, no. Until tonight. I'd left her for the afternoon while i was with my friend, came back and walked her at half 3, then had to go back out and help my friend again, but was only out half an hour. When i got back she was so pleased to see me again that i got such a lick on the chops !!
Becky is an absolute beaut, she's so special in so many ways and so good. She's had some good training in her past, and in the short time we've been together, i've learnt she's so loving and faithful, obedient and so very intelligent, she's amazing. But she has also had some hard times in her life, that i see too. She's very wary of doors banging, especially car doors, so im wondering if maybe thats where her car sickness comes from? In which case it will just be as hollysmom said and associating the car with something pleasant, though she jumps in the car no problem and just lies down, she just drools and pants the whole time then is sick !! lol.
Its very early days and it's going to take a long time for becks and me to find our bond, and i will keep u all informed. I also do really appreciate the help and guidance everyone is giving me. Everyone has different opinions and experiences, even vets, and every dog is different, its just a question of matching up the suggestions with my becks, so please peeps, all suggestions welcome. She gets weighed again monday, and to see some forever friends this saturday, all comments on her welcome All we all want is what is best for becks and all the dogs at shaks, and in the world ! I will take my camera out in the garden tomorrow and try and get some pics of her recalling, she's a site !!! I tried with my phone but she's too bloody fast, or the phone's too slow !! lol,
Anyway, ive only one last thing to say before i get off and shut up ! Steve, will u please take it down that Becky is on home trial, she's not !!!! I told u 2 days after i brought her home that u are not getting her back, just providing she's happy with me! You all can be the judge of that this saturday or next when i enter her in the shows at Jollys Tough contests but I'm confident of my girl, u should see her strutting her stuff down Cowpen Road eh Jackie?
Thank u all again, Becks says night friends, sleep well, she will

now well done with this poor little sole but as for tripe being to fatening this is only if you feed it in too big a quantity if you see her getting too big lower her meal amount and exercise her a little more and she will be fine and may be put a little cod liver oil in for coat, skin and joints,
i believe that a dogs diet is so so important for there well being and that is just asmaal part as well as exercise and training that is,
well done with this georges girl i have never met her but wen i saw her wow i fell in love me being a rottie fan help too lol .

Deb i can tell you still aint been into my shop cos now u have iams!! All I will say for now on that is that I stopped stocking it about 2 years ago mainly due to customer complaints on the food and the company. I did not mean to start any kind of debate on here but trust when I tell you i have had so much nutritional training on many different foods I could tell you what to look out for. Gregg is right when he says the first ingredient is always the largest quantity. another thing to look for is % of meat as you will be lucky if iams has over 10% and bakers has bout 4%. Once again I don't want to go into 2 much detail on here as I don't want a mouthful for slating any particular product cos at the end of the day thats not what I do, I compare them instead! As for chappie it comes highly talked about for dogs with sensitive stomachs because to be quite honest there is nowt in it to upset them!!
I do have some stuff in my car which I will give you to try tomorrow if you want that is...
Also please bear in mind that dogs always struggle with eating when they first go to new surroundings cos everything is strange to them also the weather can make a big difference. A lot of dogs, especially older ones can sometimes just "not feel like eating" in hot weather just the same as they get tired and can't be bothered.

Hi everyone, just to give u an update on Becky. Had her back to the vets today for a weight check, and all is good i'm pleased to say ! When i took her there 10 days ago she weighed 30.1 kg, today, she weighs 33kg,so we're heading in the right direction and the vets happy with her progress and says she looks good ! She was also pretty well behaved in the vets considering, and only had a couple of grumbles at some particularly gobby dogs ! I was very proud of her !!
On the bonding side, Becks and i went in the 'secure' field again last night and again i let her off the lead, only the second time since i brought her home as her recall isnt that good yet. But the last few days she's been great in the garden and coming back virtually straight away so i thought we'd see how far she's come on. She was a dream and she absolutely loved being off the lead ! I walked her around it and through all the bracken so she could get used to the smells before going wild, and wild she did ! She ran the length and bredth of the field several times over and was knackered as we trotted back home ! But when i called her, although not first time every time, pretty much and she didnt look like she was going to bolt, as even when i let her go quite far, she kept looking back to make sure i was there !
So all in all i think we're getting there

Hi all u Becky lovers, just to give u an update on my girl. Had her back to the vets today for a weight check, via newcastle and a half hour wait in the car. She was a dream today and i've been soooo proud of her!! We were kept waiting in the vets for 45 minutes and Becky was calmer than i was! She sat and even lay down not even a leg lengths distance from an old collie lab cross, never growled once the whole time we were there ! I was so disappointed tho, she'd only gained .8kg, i was expecting her to be abt 35kg, tho the vet thinks abt 34 might be her perfect weight as she's not far off and she's pleased with her progress.
Tonight on our last walk at 9 i knew there'd be lots of people about so i took some little pieces of pork out with us. I was so proud as she walked past 'the old boys' and their dogs, 4 dogs in total, on the opposite side of the road but in her sight, and didnt' get in the slightest confrontational, she noticed them three times, but i gained her attention straight back, even after i gave her her reward once we'd passed, and she never looked back once! I was soo proud of her! Doesnt sound like much, but last night she nearly had my arm off as we walked past ! I will try and upload some photos of her and would like peoples opinion. I think she looks pretty much perfect, not underweight still, but i'm not a rottie expert, what do u think?

Debbie, she looks absolutely perfect, I championed Becky's cause when she was in the pound because she reminded me of my Holly, and Stephen came to her aid and saved her, some people might think all Rotties look alike, but Becky looked so much like my Rottie Holly, if you look at the second photo of Becky that you have just posted and then look at my Holly in Rainbow Bridge you will see why. Well done to you, all your hard work will pay off, you have a beautiful girl and you should hold your head high and be proud of your self for giving a rescue Rottie a home.
