Another Otto

Otto arrived in a mad panic tonight along with Bouncer. Two more Brummy's, Otto is absoloutley terrified. He is another that is going to need so much work, but when I saw those ears on Wednesday, I knew I had to give him a chance if he needed it. As it happens he did, today.

i sat outside his kennel yesterday just to try an get him to come near me, he was having none of it, such a lovely looking dog, and those lug holes bless him. so glad you have him.

The wonderful Addy and Otto 2 met for a walk today for the first time. Otto is very hand shy, and I think that he too has had a beating at some point. He loved little Addy though. Once again it is around his back that he doesn’t like being touched, but he just sniffs and licks your hand. Otto is desperate to play, and it was great watching him and Addy in the office playing together.

Otto came out of his kennel nicely for me.  He's very keen on food and although a little skittish on the lead we had a good time.  He does a nice sit and can give a paw for treats.  I even got to stroke him all the way down his back several times.

what a smile he doesnt look happy at all lol he is a handsome lad i did get to rub his ears which he liked that seemed to get a little trust not a lot tho.

Another dog who came to us with a reputation.  From what I have seen, and bearing in mind he has only been with us a few days, any issues he has with hand shyness or skitishness can be overcome pretty quickly as he is very motivated by food as the pictures show.

He is still young which helps.
wrightk-9

he is a georges boy and he does look happy as larry lol

with time and plenty of hot dogs im sure that him and polly will come round but in my experience i think it is always better to gain trust by going at there pace and not forcing them like most people do but thwey are both in the best place now.

good look otto keep that smile going.
Trustee No2

Good point John, always at the dogs pace, I just think that Ottos pace will be a lot quicker than some of the other dogs - Polly being a prime example.

He is already targetting hands for food, offering behaviours for reward, allows himself to be touched and actually solicits attention.  I think his age is important here, still has a good level of bounce backability as opposed to some of the older dogs whos mistrust has been reinforced over a longer period of time.
wrightk-9

apsolutly agree because most of the timr when a dog gives a small growl or look and people egnor it that is a renforcement and also if a dog gives a growl they are people out there that will wack them because of that but the reson why they growl is because we did not listen to the warning signs before.

but i an sure they will do great in your care gregg.
Trustee No2

John explain what you mean by how ignoring a behaviour is reinforcing it?

Im just not sure what you mean by that, or in what context you mean?
wrightk-9

i mean for example if your dog puls you cant just egnor it you have to address it such as stopping till the lead is slack but if you egnor this then the dog is getting what he wants, to go forwards then when he gets to the park you let him off and is induing being renforced for the behaviour.

is this mor understandable mate.
Trustee No2

In that example yes by letting him pull on the lead you would be reinforcing the pulling.

However there are many behaviours that by ignoring them makes them stop (extinction) jumping up being a good example, barking in some r espects although barking can be self reinforcing.

In the respect of agonistic signals (lip curl, growl, whale eye) ignoring them is a bad idea in the sense that if you ignore the signs you get bitten.  But once the signs are given reacting to them by positivley reinforcing it with touch or contact or justifying the aggression in the dogs mind by punishing by yanking the lead, shouting at or physically abusing the dog (hitting, kicking, kneeing, scruffing) can reinforce the dog for that behaviour!!

As it happens Otto had a good session today on accepting touch and petting.  I have few worries about him in this respect so will move on to the basics.
wrightk-9

i did not mean all behaviours just some but in most cases if you egnor you are right the behaviour will become extent but not many people can do this even though it is the best way to deal with a behaviour.

i do think that by rienforcing the positive behaviour the dog will choose to do this again and again to get that reward.

Otto had his first venture out today, as he attended the SHAK Meet and Greet at Pets At Home. Considering how fearful he was when he arrived, he was an absolute winner today. Very playful, loved meeting new people, and all round a nice boy, it really was wonderful to see him in such surroundings.
wrightk-9

excellent with time thid guy will come on massivly

great to hear him being relaxed around such surroundings.
